How does Masterbatch help the Plastic Industries



  • Masterbatches are raw plastic compounds that include a high concentration of coloring pigment, or an additive or additives. These are known as color masterbatches and additive masterbatches respectively. The masterbatches are designed to be used in appropriate amounts with the basic resin mixture so that the correct final concentration can be achieved.


  • Color masterbatches are the most widely used method for coloring plastics of all types, as they provide a clean and convenient method for obtaining accurate color tones. In the same way, additive masterbatches are used to impart different properties to all types of plastics.


  • As a result of the extensive use of masterbatches in plastics, their growth is directly proportional to the growth of the plastics industry, and the masterbatch industry itself is a 10 billion dollar industry worldwide.

    •     Cleaning in the production area. Unlike powder pigments, the masterbatch does not stain or have volatility, which means that the work is done in a clean and unpolluted environment.
    •    Great uniformity due to an optimal dispersion of the pigment. The pigment particles have a strong tendency to regroup and form agglomerates of great cohesion, difficult to separate with the machines used in the final transformation so it is usual that when powdered pigments are used, spots or bursts of color appear.
    •    Easy handling and heavy. The fact that the masterbatch is presented in the form of pellets makes it easier to handle and simplify the weighing process. Weighing pellets are much easier and cleaner than weighing dust or liquids.
    •    Today Dosage. Allows automatic dosing. The pellet does not adhere to the walls of the hopper, and therefore automatic dispensers can be used..
    •    Reduction of the flow lines in pearlescent and metallic colors due to its better dispersion. In powder pigments, due to the electrical forces and the absorption of moisture, there is a tendency to form lumps, and therefore, flow lines in flat particle pigments such as metal. The master reduces this defect appreciably.
    •    Reduction in moisture absorption. Unlike powder pigments, which are highly hygroscopic, masters tend to have less moisture absorption, and some even to be practically waterproof.
    •    Cleaning speed. As there is no dust in the process, the cleaning of dosing hoppers and other peripherals is practically immediate.

    Masterbatch Quality


    The quality of a masterbatch is measured, among other things, by the particle size of the incorporated pigment, by the degree of dispersion of this and by the quality of the base resin and its compatibility with the resin to be colored.

    Another important factor in the quality of a masterbatch is the number of mineral charges included in its composition. The price is the reason why these charges are incorporated where they are admitted by the processor by the final product.

    The concentration of the Color Masterbatch

    The pigment concentration ranges from 15 to 30% for organic pigments and up to 60% when it comes to inorganic pigments. The doses to be used in the process usually vary between 1% to 3.0%.
